CARDAN REPAIR AND RESTORATION

The drive shaft, commonly known as a driveshaft, is a mechanical device used to transmit torque from the gearbox to the driving wheels of a vehicle, particularly in vehicles with rear or all-wheel drive. It consists of several key components, such as universal joints, bearings, and couplings, which provide flexibility and allow it to operate under various conditions.

Main functions and structure of the drive shaft:
  1. Torque transmission: The drive shaft transmits rotational motion from the gearbox to the rear differential (in the case of rear-wheel drive) or to the front and rear differentials (in the case of all-wheel drive).
  2. Compensation for angle and length changes: Since the axle and gearbox are at different heights and may shift relative to each other (especially when driving over rough terrain), the drive shaft must be flexible. This flexibility is provided by universal joints and splined connections.
Drive shaft installation:
  1. Vehicle preparation: Before installing the drive shaft, the vehicle is lifted on a hoist, providing easy access to the underside and gearbox.
  2. Removing the old drive shaft (if necessary): Using wrenches and other tools, the old shaft is dismantled, and the bolts securing the universal joints and coupling are removed.
  3. Balancing and testing: Before installation, the shaft is checked for runout on a balancing machine. Corrections are made as necessary to eliminate vibrations during subsequent driving. Then, a test drive is performed.
  4. Installing the new drive shaft:
    • The new shaft is lifted into place.
    • The shaft is secured with fasteners on the splines and universal joints.
    • Special attention is paid to the torque of the bolts to ensure secure fixation and prevent vibrations.
Types of services related to the drive shaft:
  • Drive shaft diagnostics and repair: Includes checking for wear on universal joints, bearings, splined connections, and replacing them as necessary.
  • Drive shaft balancing: A process aimed at eliminating vibrations during shaft rotation, which is particularly important for comfortable and safe driving.
  • Drive shaft replacement: Complete replacement of the drive shaft if diagnostics reveal significant damage or wear.
